Fireworks in Berkley - The limits of city power

Fireworks over downtown Detroit

It's that time of year again where the citizens of Berkley will see a spectacular light show every night from now until July 5th.

Or, depending on your perspective, be subjected to a non-stop barrage of noise and have the real risk of their home burning down.

We live in one of the densest cities in the state. Not only is all the noise a nuisance to many families with pets and children, it can be traumatic for suffers of PTSD such as veterans, and is downright dangerous, as can be seen by the fact that fireworks destroyed two homes and damaged a third last year in Berkley.

Yet this is one case where we can't blame our city leaders. Sometimes, the state takes away local control, and in this case requires cities to allow the use of fireworks.

I think the state should give control back to local communities so they can do what is best for them. I urge everyone who feels the same to contact Representative Wittenberg and Senator Knollenberg with your concerns.

However you plan to celebrate, I hope you will enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly. Happy Independence Day!
